EXPERIENCE HAS AN EXPIRY DATE

We often say proudly:

“I have 20 or 30 years of experience.”

But there’s an uncomfortable question hidden inside that sentence:

Do we really have 30 years of experience?

Or have we repeated the same experience for 30 years?

The world doesn’t stop changing because we became experienced.

Technology changes. Customers change. Markets change. The way people work, communicate, buy and make decisions changes.

Experience is incredibly valuable. It gives us judgment, perspective and something no course can easily teach: the ability to recognize patterns because we have seen similar situations before.

But experience becomes dangerous when it turns into:

“We’ve always done it this way.”

The professionals I admire most aren’t necessarily the youngest or the most experienced.

They are the ones who remain curious.

They combine old lessons with new knowledge.

They are willing to learn from someone younger, experiment with a new technology, question an old assumption and occasionally admit:

“Maybe what worked for me before won’t work tomorrow.”

That’s when experience becomes a competitive advantage rather than comfortable history.

The book Lunch break thoughts

☕ A thought to take back after lunch:

When was the last time you learned something that made you question something you already “knew”?
